A Beginners Guide to pH in Hydroponics

Balancing the pH in your hydroponics system is incredibly important to the health and vitality of your crop. If the pH is not in the correct range then essential nutrients and micronutrients will not be available for uptake by your plant. This can lead to nutrient deficiencies and eventually death.

pH is the measure of acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution. The term pH refers to the potential hydrogen/hydroxyl ion content of a solution. Solutions ionize into positive and negative ions. If a solution has more hydrogen (positive) ions than hydroxyl (negative) ions then it is acidic and has a pH in the range of 0 to 6.9.

Alternatively, if a solution has more hydroxyl (negative) ions than hydrogen (positive) ions then it is alkaline with a pH in the range of 7.1 to 14. Pure water and deionized water has a balance of hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions and is, therefore, pH neutral (pH 7).

The video below, Ethan gives a lesson on the importance of pH and how to manage it on your farm. He explores why controlling pH is essential to growing healthy crops, pH levels leading to deficiencies in your plants, why a healthy farm requires daily pH monitoring.

Ethan also gives a rundown on the best ways to monitor pH levels, weighs the pros and cons of pH meters versus litmus tests, and advises on what products you will need as well as avoid to make sure your crops grow the best that they can.

Keeping a garden’s pH within the correct range means your plants will have access to the full menu of essential nutrient ions for optimal growth and productivity.
